A Sentence That Changed Everything
“You will go blind.”
Those were the exact words spoken by Dr. Wang in a calm, matter-of-fact tone.
There was no hesitation. No softening of the message.
That moment happened during a visit to a clinic in Taiwan, a place known for having one of the most efficient healthcare systems in the world. Doctors there are often direct and straightforward. Even when the news is difficult, they do not hide behind polite
language.
They simply tell you the truth.
And in that moment, I received mine.
The Diagnosis
A year earlier, I had been diagnosed with glaucoma by Dr. DJ.
He explained that I had normotensive glaucoma.
What does that mean?
- Normal eye pressure
- But damage to retinal and optic nerve can still occur
- Vision may change gradually over time
Most glaucoma patients have high intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye).
In my case, the pressure was considered normal.
Yet damages were already happening.
Dr. DJ prescribed Taflotan, instructing me to put one drop in each eye daily.
The Cold Reality
While traveling in Taiwan, I ran out of my eye drops and scheduled an appointment with Dr. Wang to get a refill.
Instead of a quick prescription and polite conversation, I received something much more powerful.
A wake-up call.
“You will go blind.”
As uncomfortable as it was, I actually preferred his blunt honesty.
Sometimes the truth—however harsh—is exactly what we need to take action.
A New Treatment Plan
Dr. Wang reviewed my eye pressure.
- Current pressure: 18 mmHg
- Goal: below 16 mmHg
- Ideal: below 14 mmHg
To help manage it further, he prescribed Alphagan, with instructions to use it three times daily.
Then he asked a surprising question:
“Are you taking any supplements to support blood circulation?”
I told him no.
He suggested Ginkgo Biloba.
Before I could ask why circulation mattered, he was already waving the next patient in.
Efficiency is a hallmark of Taiwan’s healthcare system.
But patient explanations are not always part of that efficiency.
My Curiosity Took Over
Having spent 15 years in the pharmaceutical and dietary supplement industry, I was immediately intrigued.
I knew Ginkgo Biloba mostly as a supplement for memory and cognitive health.
For eye health, the usual supplements are: Lutein, Zeaxanthin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Zinc
These nutrients became widely known from the AREDS 2 Study, which focused on age-related macular degeneration.
But Ginkgo for eye health?
That was new to me.
A Deep Dive Into the Science Ginkgo Biloba
The moment I returned home, I opened my laptop and went straight to PubMed, one of the largest databases of medical research.
I typed:
“Ginkgo biloba” and “glaucoma.”
The search returned 65 scientific papers.
These included:
- Laboratory studies
- Animal studies
- Human clinical trials
- Review articles
As I read through them, two major benefits became clear.
1. Blood Flow in the Eye
Studies suggest Ginkgo Biloba may help support:
- Blood vessel function
- Circulation
- Delivery of oxygen and nutrients
Why this matters:
The eye relies on healthy circulation to maintain normal function.
2. Antioxidant Defense
Research also suggests that Ginkgo may:
- Help reduce oxidative stress
- Support cellular health
- Contribute to normal antioxidant defenses
Think of antioxidants as rust protection for your cells.
Just like metal rusts over time, cells can also be affected
by everyday stress.
Antioxidants help slow that process.
Search for Other Supplements
After learning about Ginkgo Biloba, I wondered:
Are there other supplements with strong research in this area?
Back to PubMed.
This time I searched:
“Dietary supplements” and “glaucoma.”
At the top of the results was an important paper:
Nutritional Supplementation in the Prevention and Treatment of Glaucoma (Chaudhry 2021)
A Major Scientific Review
The review examined 71 studies, including:
- Laboratory research
- Animal studies
- Human clinical trials
- 11 randomized controlled trials
Researchers evaluated how nutritional supplements may play a role in:
- Oxidative stress
- Cellular health
- Normal physiological function
Key Supplements Studied
The review looked at many nutrients:
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin B1
- Vitamin B3 (Nicotinamide)
- Vitamin B6
- Vitamin B12
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin E
- Ginkgo Biloba
- Coenzyme Q10
- Lutein
- Zeaxanthin
- Resveratrol
- Magnesium
- Saffron
- Curcumin
Among them, two stood out based on the amount of research available.
The Standout Nutrient: Nicotinamide
Nicotinamide (a form of Vitamin B3) had a strong body of research.
Studies included:
- Animal studies
- Cell studies
- Human clinical trials
One human study was:
- Randomized
- Double-blind
- Placebo-controlled
- Crossover
This type of study design is considered highly rigorous in clinical research.
The study reported differences in visual function measures compared with placebo.
The Standout Nutrient: Gingko Biloba
The same review identified five studies on Ginkgo Biloba:
- 1 laboratory study
- 4 human clinical trials
Results included:
- Observations related to circulation
- Mixed findings across studies
Science rarely gives perfect answers—but the findings were noteworthy.
My Conclusion
After carefully reviewing the review article and conducting a thorough search for studies published after the Chaudhry 2021 paper, I identified two additional human clinical studies on nicotinamide and two on ginkgo biloba.
Based on this expanded body of evidence, I arrived at a clear and simple conclusion:
Two nutrients had strong researches in supporting normal retinal and optic nerve function:
- Nicotinamide (Vitamin B3)
- Ginkgo Biloba
The Dosage Problem
Next I searched for supplements containing both ingredients.
They existed.
But there was a problem.
The doses were extremely low.
Typical products contained single to double digit milligrams.
But many studies used:
Nicotinamide
- 500 – 3,000 mg per day
Ginkgo Biloba
- 120 – 240 mg per day
Those small doses in many supplements raised questions about formulation relevance.
My Bespoke Approach
So I did the next best thing.
I leveraged my industry relationships with a trusted partner lab to develop a bespoke capsule formulation of
- 500 mg Nicotinamide
- 120 mg Ginkgo Biloba
which I began to take every morning.
Within one month, I noticed changes.
The Changes I Felt
Before taking the supplements:
- My eyes would strain after one hour of screen work
- I often had to close and massage eyes
After one month:
- I could work 3–4 hours with greater comfort
- My eyes felt less tired
- They were less sensitive to bright sunlight
I felt confident that my bespoke supplement was making a difference, and I wanted to share it with others experiencing similar challenges.
The Birth of GlaucoProtect
Because of my background in the supplement industry, I knew something important:
Many supplements on the market are inconsistent.
Problems include:
- Ingredients not matching label claims
- Poor quality control
- Lack of testing for contaminants
Even expensive brands are not immune.
Price does not always equal quality.
Building a Better Supplement
That experience inspired the creation of GlaucoProtect.
The goal was simple:
Create a supplement that combines:
All in one convenient capsule.
Quality You Can Verify
Every batch of GlaucoProtect is tested by thrid-party internationally recognized laboratories such as:
- SGS
- Eurofins Scientific
Each batch receives a Certificate of Analysis (COA).
What is a COA?
Think of it like a birth certificate for the product.
It confirms:
- The exact amount of each ingredient
- Absence of harmful microbes
- Absence of heavy metals
- Safety and purity
Customers can download the COA by entering the lot number at here.
Why I Created GlaucoProtect
It started with my own diagnosis
